Yahoo Inc. was in the crosshairs Friday, a day after signing a search advertising deal with Google Inc., as many investors, analysts and onetime suitor Microsoft Corp. criticized the partnership.

The agreement, hailed by Yahoo as a solution to its slumping finances, was alternately denounced as ego-driven, a threat to competition and, as one analyst put it, “one of the worst strategic maneuvers seen in the Internet industry.”

The Sunnyvale Web portal has agreed to outsource some of its search engine advertising to Google, the Mountain View Internet titan and erstwhile rival. Yahoo will continue to sell search ads, but will display Google’s ads in cases when they would generate more money - boosting Yahoo’s annual revenue by an estimated $800 million.

Many investors consider the pact a poor substitute for a sale to Microsoft, which had courted Yahoo with a $47.5 billion takeover before withdrawing the offer of $33 per share on May 3 after the two sides couldn’t agree on a price. Those shareholders now say a merger would have provided a bigger return for them, given that Yahoo’s shares closed at $23.47 on Friday, down 10 percent in the aftermath of the Google outsourcing agreement and Microsoft reiterating Thursday that it is uninterested in an acquisition.

“Some of the people involved from Yahoo should have kept their egos in check,” said a portfolio manager at an investment management firm that controls more than half a million Yahoo shares, referring to Yahoo Chief Executive Officer Jerry Yang, who he said mismanaged the merger negotiations.

The Google deal was disclosed just hours after Yang and his board rejected a proposal by Microsoft to buy Yahoo’s search business after concluding that the partnership would leave Yahoo without a key component to its future growth. The Google deal, according to a source familiar with the matter, provides more flexibility for Yahoo, as well as more revenue.

“Clearly, it is time to move on, and we believe that this agreement with Google does so by strengthening our competitiveness,” Yang said in announcing the deal.

Kevin Johnson, a Microsoft president who oversees the company’s online business, touted his company’s offer in a letter to Microsoft employees Friday. An agreement, he said, would have “provided compelling value to Yahoo and its shareholders.”

Under the offer, Microsoft would have paid $1 billion for Yahoo’s search business and entered into a long-term search advertising partnership in which they would share revenue. In addition, Microsoft would have invested $8 billion in Yahoo at $35 per share.

Johnson reiterated Microsoft’s antitrust concerns about Google, the No. 1 search engine, pairing up with Yahoo, No. 2. The Justice Department is already reviewing the deal, which won’t be implemented for at least 3 1/2 months.

“Unfortunately Yahoo has chosen a different course, and yesterday announced an agreement that would start to consolidate over 90 percent of the paid search advertising market in Google’s hands. This will make the market far less competitive,” Johnson said, predicting that the deal will face a host of legal and regulatory problems.

Several analysts were unimpressed with Yahoo’s decision to join forces with Google. In a research report, Jeetil Patel of Deutsche Bank said that Yahoo is “waving the white flag” in search advertising and, in effect, is signaling to its advertisers to simply do business with Google.

“This effectively signals the end of Yahoo’s competitive entry in the paid-search business,” Patel said.

The question of link baiting got a huge bump late last month when Lyndon Antcliff now notorious hoax made headlines in major news sources in both the US and the UK.

The story concerned a 13 year old boy’s shopping spree that supposedly included a rendezvous at a TX motel to play X-Box with call girls. It hit Digg and shot a ridiculous number of links to the UK financial company Antcliff was working for, as well as being picked up by Fox News.

Matt Cutts, Google’s head of the ‘spam division’ still says linkbait can be a good thing, so we can all relax and keep posting controversial stuff to lure people to our site. Just so long as we label them “Fake picture of alien” rather than “See the real alien the government doesn’t want you to know about that I found living in my garage.”

Okay, that was an extreme example. Seriously, though, there is plenty of interesting content we can tag up with a catchy phrase for a hook and use to catch us some fish… uh, customers. People still like to share, and you can get some nice natural links if you have a particularly good piece of helpful info or a cool slant on a news story that everyone else missed.

Which brings us to widgets. Who doesn’t like free stuff? If you have the tech skills, you can put together a nice little package or tool that will be attractive and give it away - along with a link to your site. Don’t be snaaky about it though, let people know that they will be downloading a link to you along with the widget - most will not have a problem if you tell them up front, but might be a little ticked to see a link they didn’t know about down the road.

A widget for a specific type of calculation is fun, as algorithms can be tiresome. Also popular are widgets that let the user customize to fit their own parameters. Don’t forget to package it attractively - no-one like s an ugly widget!

Another cool way to bait your site is to advertise free content - offer to provide original short articles or blurbs in your related fields in exchange for having your byline (and your link) posted with the article. This is great for publications that archive online, so if you are your own article writer and freelancer you might find it worth your while to hook some fish with the promise of some top shelf freebie content.

When it comes right down to it, baiting your site runs right along with all the other SEO practices, and staying out of trouble is as simple as this: keep your nose clean, look at each action from the viewpoints of Google and the consumer, and gauge how you would feel if you saw the hook, and then the actual site. Would you feel inclined to take the bait?

In US the SNS regulation often focuses on the safety of children. They’re also looking to improve the way links are handled. One of the many criticisms of Twitter is the ability to intelligently handle different media types, like links to Flickr or other image sources, and better use of inline linking. Many of the add-ons to Twitter, like Twhirl, can do this by taking Twitter from the API and laying over their own functionality, but the Web interface has been the same spartan landscape since the service’s inception. FULL ARTICLE @ MASHABLE

Some 11 million people, or 30 percent of UK internet users, spent time at sites like Bebo, MySpace and Facebook, eMarketer estimates. Those three sites account for the lion’s share of users in the UK.

Though social sites account for only a tiny portion of UK online ad spending (3.4 percent in 2008), social-network ad spend will rise 77 percent this year to £115 million ($225 million), eMarketer projects. Spending in 2012 will have increased 148 percent over 2008 levels

Social networks have been part of the UK internet landscape for several years, and the UK dominates social-network spending in Western Europe with 68 percent of the market.

eMarketer expects the UK social-network market to enjoy slightly greater ad-spending percentage gains than that of the US; the UK social-network ad market trails that of the US by one to two years.

“Though social network advertising is forecast to grow aggressively this year, it will only do so if social network operators can develop substantial metrics showing the value and performance of the advertising,” said Debra Aho Williamson, author of the report.

<person></person>Steve Ballmer said Tuesday his company’s interest in <org></org>Yahoo Inc.<orgid value="NASDAQ-NMS:YHOO"></orgid> (YHOO) hinges on developments in online advertising.”The fundamental driver for us is we’re looking to accelerate our moves to get scale in online advertising,” Ballmer said.

“We do think software technology and the scale of user interactions will be an important part of the way the media and the advertising business shakes out in the future,” he added.

Ballmer predicted that the <money></money>$550 billion annual advertising industry is “going to get turned on its head, basically, in the next 10 years” as media moves almost exclusively online.

Last month, <org></org>Microsoft<orgid value="NASDAQ-NMS:MSFT"></orgid> withdrew an offer to purchase <org></org>Yahoo<orgid value="NASDAQ-NMS:YHOO"></orgid> but the two companies are continuing to talk about possible partnerships.

Greek social networking service wadja.com has been generating some interest recently, mostly because Facebook has apparently banned emails that contain any mention of the site - so they must be doing something right. Facebook said it’s because of spam, while Wadja thinks it might be more to do with their popularity in their home country.

The first version of the site rolled out in August 2006 funded by angel investors and 16 people work at the headquarters in Athens, Greece.

Managing director Alex Christoforou tells us more.

Alex Christoforou, managing director of Wadja.com

• Explain your business to my Mum.
“Wadja is a communication service that goes where you go. You can collect, organise, and manage your friends, photos, videos, and contacts in a way that can be accessed on your PC and mobile phone. Wadja can also help you connect via email, web or global SMS, for free, so you are always connected.”

• How do you make money?
“We don’t rely on the standard cost per click revenue models that power 99% of community-centred sites. Our revenue model is based on providing premium content to our users, partnerships with mobile operators, premium messaging services targeted at businesses and professionals, and a new message advertising platform based on friend-to-friend communication.”

• What’s your background?
“I was born and raised in the US, I have a degree in economics and masters in international business and management. I split my time between our offices in Cyprus and Athens.”

• How many users do you have now, and what’s your target within 12 months?
“We currently have 1.5m registered users. Our target is to surpass the 10m user mark, but more importantly to add value to our users through great communications, which also helps to grow our business.”

• Name your closest competitors.
“Many of our users also have connections with Hi5. We see many similarities in our international feel and language support, though I feel we are more European focused with a big tilt towards mobile.

• How are personalisation and recommendation part of your business?
“Focusing heavily on mobile communication means generating local buzz while growing usability on a global scale. Wadja was the first network to provide interface language while giving users the option to view other communities on a totally different country level. For example, you can set your Wadja profile language to Greek but view, browse, and search for friends located in the UK if that is where you live. It is simple but very personal. ”

• What’s your biggest challenge?
“Creating a social networking site that is fun, innovative and financially viable. That is, based on a business model not funded purely by sponsorship and banner ads.”

• Any weird business experiences so far?
“Just last week Facebook banned the word Wadja.com throughout the whole site. That was weird and quite amusing. Here is this big Silicon Valley social network banning the word Wadja, an outfit based in the Mediterranean, having fun connecting people.”

• Are we in the middle of a new dot com bubble?
“Not a bubble - a readjustment. People are questioning the financial viability of social networking. People are asking how these sites make money, but so far none of the big three or four networks have solved this issue, irrelevant of their astronomical valuations. We need to get back to basics and build open, useful services and tools, anchored in a business model not entirely dependent on serving traditional banner ads to visitors.”

• Which tech businesses or web thinkers are the ones to watch?
“Steve Jobs - always. He reinvents the industries he goes into with a precision and flair for design that is second to none. Eric Schmidt of Google is also great. He executes a plan better than any other.”

• Where do you want the company to be in five years?
“We are all about open, device independent messaging and media sharing, so really in five years I would like Wadja to be the service of choice for the mobile active generation.”

wadja.com

The European Parliament is to create its own social networking website at a cost of £3.2 million to taxpayers.

Creating and running the new service will cost more than £4,000 for each Euro-MP over the next 18 months, even though many already belong to free and popular networking sites such as Facebook or Bebo.

Despite the use of taxpayers’ cash, much of MyParl.eu will not be visible to the public, with its networking “restricted to parliamentarians”, The Daily Telegraph has learned.

Only parliamentarians and “civil society”, Brussels-speak for officially sanctioned NGOs and trade associations, will be able to use the site for comment and debate. “Myparl.eu offers you a unique online political forum with a social networking tool, enabling you to engage with other parliamentarians across the EU,” said the pilot site launched in Brussels on Thursday.

AT&T has offered a mobile version of MySpace since 2006 and also supports a mobile version of Facebook. Mobile-specific social networks like airG and MocoSpace say they have millions of users worldwide. And Nokia is pouring money into Ovi, its own brand of Internet service. FULL ARTICLE @ FORBES

Google’s share of Internet searches rose 1.8 percent from March to April, from 59.8 percent in March to 61.6 percent.

Yahoo, meanwhile, the target a possible proxy fight and of a takeover bid by Microsoft earlier this month, saw its share decline 0.9 percent, from 21.3 percent to 20.4 percent of searches.

Searches beyond the core domain, such as map searches and searches for user-generated videos, were not included in the numbers.

The rankings also reported that Americans conducted 10.6 billion searches on the core search engines, a 2 percent decline from March. More than 6.5 billion core searches were conducted on Google, followed by 2.2 billion on Yahoo sites and 961 million on Microsoft sites. AOL saw 491 million searches, and Ask.com saw 458 million, according to comScore.

Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT)walked away earlier this month from its offer to buy Sunnyvale-based Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) for $33 a share, or about $47.5 billion. Yahoo said it would take a minimum of $37 a share.

Reports since have said Microsoft in considering other deals with Yahoo that would not be a complete takeover. The software giant is looking for ways to better compete with Mountain View-based Google (NASDAQ: GOOG).

Investor Carl Icahn has also begun a proxy battle to force a sale of Yahoo, and has compiled a slate of directors he wants to have take over at the company.

Social networking has moved rapidly from teen-centric sites such as MySpace into the realm of business with career-networking sites like LinkedIn. Now the trend is picking up speed in the world of small business with sites like Moli.com.

This self-described social media/social commerce site has launched the Moli Small Business Center, which it said is designed as a destination where small businesses can go to collaborate with, learn from and market to their peers.

The company defines small business as a the owner/operator or business with fewer than 10 employees and Judy Balint, Moli’s president and COO (and one-half of the management team that created Etrade), estimated that there are 22 million such small businesses in the U.S., and a total of 40 million world wide.

Balint described Moli as a free, online social community designed for collaboration and e-commerce, a place where individuals and small business owners can create their own Web sites. It lets them manage multiple Web profiles from a single account to control their privacy and separate their social, business and family relationships.

The site offers tools and resources to help small business owners take their companies to the next level and, said Balint, still have time for their real life. Through a partnership with E-Myth, an expert in work/life integration, Moli offers E-Learning courses covering topics such as sales, marketing, accounting, HR, finance and operations.

“Moli combines rich functionality that lets people do more in one place in less time,” said Balint. “It lets us get offline and get things done in the real word. We’re not teenagers with hours to spend. Efficiency is key for us.”

Other resources available in Moli’s Small Business Center include a variety of forums, courtesy of a partnership with Yedda. In the community forum, members can connect, network, discuss issues and get advice and support. In the Ask the Experts forum, members can seek advice from retired business entrepreneurs.

The Small Business Center also offers a media album, calendar, blogs, RSS feeds and message boards along with audio and video clips and podcasts that contain content from both original and third-party sources.

“Business owners can’t afford to spend unproductive time searching aimlessly around the Web looking for the resources they need to better manage their businesses and improve the quality of their lives,” said Balint. “With the Moli Small Business Center, members have the most comprehensive set of resources and tools available to grow their businesses for long-term success.”

Web Pages, E-Commerce and SEO

According to Balint, small business owners often have a hard time driving traffic to their Web sites, if they even have one. “Building a Web site in a social networking environment let’s then focus on marketing and promoting their business instead of on SEO,” she said. She added that Moli does it for them because its building community for everyone.

A free Moli account includes a control panel, a private page where you can manage your separate business, personal and family Web pages. Balint said that Moli uses CoVibe technology that protects personally identifiable information and provides members with consumer data aggregation and analysis on the visitors to their sites.

Members can purchase reports from CoVibe that contain real-time stats on the visitors to their sites, including how many visitors, their sex and their age. Balint promises that none of the information is personally identifiable but meant as a way to let members know what kind of an audience is interested in them.

Reports cost between $3.99 and $7.99 depending on how many variables and the type of analysis you want to include.

Moli also includes online store resources to let you sell products on your site. Tools include audio and video, text, a proprietary, AJAX-based shopping cart, Google Checkout and PayPal. Balint claims you can set up an online store in 30 minutes without any programming.

The online store costs $3.99 per month, and Balint said there’s no limit to the number of products that you can sell, and that Moli does not take a cut of the transaction fee. Currently, the e-commerce function does not work with QuickBooks, but Balint said that integration with the popular accounting program is in the works.

Membership on Moli is free, and includes one personal URL and as many profile pages as you like. You can make profile pages private, public or hidden altogether, a capability that Balint said makes it easy for small businesses to create separate, hidden pages for vendors, clients, customers and employees.

Additional URLs cost $1.99 per year each. Currently, Balint said there are no storage limitations because the service is still young and they’re learning about the community’s usage patterns.

They may add storage limits in the future, with options to purchase more, but Balint said the basic storage offering would stay in line with the marketplace (i.e., Google currently offers more than 2 GB of free storage).

The company launched in January 2008 with 241,000 registered members. According to Balint, in April 2008, the site received 20.9 million unique visitors.Lauren Simonds is the managing editor of SmallBusinessComputing.com

Loss of productivity has been a major concern for business owners and companies all around the world. Employees have been known to spend working hours doing other things apart from work: socializing, gossiping, and the sort. With the advent of the Internet, a new time-waster could be a threat to productivity in businesses.

They are the famous online social networking websites: You know them- Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, Hi5, and the likes of them.

Let me state categorically that I have no personal beef with social networking. As a matter of fact, I am a big fan and addict. I have an account on one of these sites where I spend at least twenty of my time everyday. I believe that Forums, bulletin boards and blogs on these networking sites are an excellent way to communicate business ideas, views, opinions and policies.

Facebook is a good site. It’s a beautiful thing that through facebook you could reunite with old friends, acquaintances and loved ones. You could also make new friends and build on already existing relationships. Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg calls it a great social networking device through which company owners and employees can follow-up on business contacts and possibly seal business deals.

I beg to differ.

If truths must be told, Facebook is a big time-waster which eats seriously into the working time of millions of company employees all over the world. We all know that in many organizations round the world, many employees burn several minutes or even hours of working time socialising on Facebook. Instead of working, employees spend time accepting friend requests, event invitations, and loading a battalion of applications, most of which in the real sense are silly, pointless and irrelevant.

Last year in August, some of South Africa´s biggest companies blocked access to Facebook because it was slowing down productivity on the part of company staff. All companies may want to do the same thing. Alternatively, companies could limit access to Facebook and make the site accessible only during lunch-break hours.

While so-called internet marketing experts and employees may claim that such sites could be used as a huge business tool in connecting with other businesses and other potential customers, what ever happened to the KISS principle: Keep it simple stupid?

Facebook, Myspace and the likes make social networking complicated and time wasting with the battalion of applications friends request you to upload. In Facebook, for example, the numerous number of substantive features are redundant. You are constantly distracted by friends who are updating their profiles, giving you virtual drinks, chocolate, punches, hugs and kisses. You also feel an obligation to respond and so you send the same back to them. You are tempted to send wall posts as well, comment on pictures and poke some of your favourite people. By the time you are done with all that, you’ve wasted an hour or more, and you’ve got a pile of workload on your desk. In the long run, your productivity is derailed, and you end up postponing work until later.

Considering how much you have to do in managing your facebook life, you are better off on LinkedIn if you really need to connect to your workers through the web.

LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site which provides one with less distraction. Basically, it allows you to create and maintain a list of your professional contacts, and its purpose is strictly to network with your professional customers and potential ones. LinkedIn keeps it simple. There are no irrelevant features, applications and walls to consume your time. All its features are strictly for business purposes. The LinkedIn Groups feature for example, allows users to establish new business relationships by joining alumni, industry, or professional and other relevant groups mainly used for professional networking. Just what you need for business.

Facebook could be the best social networking site for maintaining and building and maintaining informal relationships. It’s also a great tool for wasting time at work. But if you are really bent on online business networking, why not stick to LinkedIn? You cannot go wrong that way.

AOL has closed its US$850 million acquisition of Bebo, and the portal will use the social network as the basis for a new People Networks business unit.

Bebo Chief Executive Officer Joanna Shields will serve as executive vice president of AOL and president of the People Networks division, which will combine Bebo and AOL’s two chat platforms — AIM and ICQ. All told, the platforms will reach 80 million users worldwide, AOL said.

AOL is positioned to “capitalize on the exploding social media space,” said AOL CEO Randy Falco.

The move comes as Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO) continue their lengthy and complex mating dance — the two reportedly are mulling a partnership that stops short of an all-out merger and could have implications for that portal. Yahoo and Bebo have had an advertising partnership in place since late 2007 through which Yahoo serves display ads to Bebo users in the UK and Ireland.

A Unique Approach

The close of the acquisition will enable AOL to focus on three business areas — its advertising network, publishing and people networks, Falco noted. He argued that AOL is making progress in all three areas, citing recent comScore data showing that the portal’s publishing network reached all-time highs in both unique visitors and page views earlier this spring. The question will be how well AOL can monetize Bebo’s fast-growing user base. AOL believes it is well-positioned to do that because of its Platform-A advertising unit and other content offerings.

For instance, Bebo has long set itself apart by offering ways for users to utilize music and other media — the platform is known for a variety of original, serial video programming. With the instant messaging platform and other tools, people will be able to connect more effectively with like-minded people across the Web, Shields said.

Bebo’s unique approach to video programming has caught the attention of advertisers, noted JupiterResearch analyst David Card.

Bebo’s KateModern program is hugely popular in the UK and has proven the value of creating content that is specifically designed for the Web, not television content repurposed for the Internet , Card told the E-Commerce Times.

“Bebo has been able to bring along an audience for its shows,” said Card. Perhaps more importantly, it has been able to secure sponsors, who buy non-traditional product placement and other sponsorship opportunities. The early successes could enable AOL to position Bebo as a rival to YouTube and perhaps one even better suited for monetization.

Integration, Amalgamation

Users will now be able to use a single sign-in or screen name for both AOL and Bebo, and the social network’s content will be cross-distributed over the broader AOL network. Other AOL acquisitions — including widget firm Goowy Media and question-and-answer service Yedda– will be folded into the People Networks division.

Bebo also features an Open Media Platform that has enabled traditional media companies to distribute their content to Bebo users and has been effective at persuading third-party developers to create applications for the platform, with more than 6,000 such plug-ins developed since the platform was opened up earlier this year.

Getting Bebo a higher profile in the U.S. will likely be a top priority for AOL, Forrester Research analyst Charlene Li told the E-Commerce Times.

“As a stand-alone social network, Bebo had no chance of competing against big boys like MySpace and Facebook,” she said. “But as an integrated part of the larger AOL content and ad network, it has amazing potential to play a role in how social networks develop.”

Looking Ahead

AOL may see a future where social networks are integrated into all parts of a user’s online activities and interactions, rather than standalone, walled-off sites, Li added.

Meanwhile, Facebook may become even more of a sought-after takeover target now, and even more so if the strategy of AOL proves successful, Li added. Microsoft already owns a 5 percent stake in that network and reportedly revisited an outright acquisition after Yahoo repeatedly rebuffed it.

“While there’s tremendous consumer uptake of social networking sites, marketers still haven’t figured out how to tap into all of that energy and enthusiasm,” she added. If AOL can point to a successful path for marketers, that could dramatically change the entire market.

Make good thumbnails, first and the last frames.
A video thumbnail is what users view when they are deciding between which videos to watch. Different video search engines will grab thumbnails differently. Some will use the first frame while others will take a frame from somewhere in the middle. You will need to experiment with each site to make sure they are displaying the right thumbnail for your video.

Branding
The first and the last frames are perfect for branding. Place your logo there, as well as your URL and any other information you think is applicable.

Uniqueness
More than anything, make sure as well that your video is creative and unique. This is the best way to attract backlinks from people who want to share your video.

Additional Optimization Techniques:

Use social bookmarking sites and tools to assist in the visibility of your videos, add backlinks to your videos, and create traffic.

Train editors to think like video searchers

Optimization in the Future:
As search engines are working to better determine the content and relevance of multimedia content, the methods that we use to optimize websites and in particular, videos, images, and audio in the future may be quite different. Currently optimization still relies upon including Meta data and keyword information in or surrounding the current content.

With search engines like Blinkx.com, who claim to rely more and more so on OCR (optical character recognition), voice/speech recognition, and image recognition, optimization of video content will likely be much more so about the quality of the video itself. For example, if Blinkx.com relies upon voice recognition as an example, it would be important to make certain that you are speaking clearly in the video so as to make the job of voice recognition easier for the search engines.

However, take a look at this interesting post from Danny S. on Search Engine Land. Danny explains that Blinkx and other still rely heavily on meta data for searching. Danny also reviews some tests that he conducted with video searches.

HTML surrounding video.
When you publish a video on a website, you will want to make certain that it is surrounded with HTML content. This way the search engines can get additional information from the surrounding page as the information contained within a video file can be limited.

Filename, title, description.
These elements are not be enough to allow your video to rank well on its own but it is a necessary step and without this information, your video will definitively NOT rank well.

Video Files Metadata Optimization
Make sure to encode the keywords into your video’s meta data. Tag videos with specific keywords, even if it means tagging each scene.

Keyword “video”.
Eric Papczun pointed out at the Search Engine Strategies conference in NY this past April, that a lot of people add the word “video” to their search query keyword phrase. As a result, make sure that you add the word “video” to your title, description, meta data, etc.

Links and Backlinks.
Just as with SEO for regular webpages, you will want to get as many backlins as possible with the relevant keywords and phrases as the anchor text for these links. Whether this is your own page, or merely a page on a video sharing site that you want to have rank, you will need backlinks. In addition, it is a good idea to crosslink to videos using keywords in anchor text.

Video sitemaps / MRSS / RSS.
In order for crawlers to easily find all of your online video content, you will want to create a sitemap, RSS, or media RSS (MRSS) file to help engines identify where to locate and index your videos.

One Video Directory.
Keeping your video content at one place off the root directory helps in providing easy access to search engine crawlers. Move all of your videos into one folder and make sure to upload all your future videos to this same folder

No to Flash Video Players.
Search engines have a hard time crawling video content inside flash players so stay away from them if you are hosting videos on your own site.

Optimize your URLs.
In the same way that you do this for other web pages, you will want to optimize your URLs so that they to contain information about the video. Also, make sure you only have one video per URL.

Submissions

Upload Optimization - These type of video search engines required that your upload your video search files.

RSS Optimization - Submit your video to search engines that accept either RSS and/or MRSS.

Social Media Optimization - Add a social flair by getting your “friends” to submit or vote for you on the social media sites

Microsoft has provided a brief statement this evening regarding the Yahoo deal. Good gosh, will this go on all year? This time it looks like they are pursuing a “transaction” which could mean a million different things. Perhaps an acquisition of the advertising arm of Yahoo and let Yahoo focus on the content and developer side of the business. Perhaps it’s the opposite where Microsoft will acquire the services and Yahoo will remain with the advertising components? My guess is that using the word transaction means Microsoft is looking to acquire some part of Yahoo’s offering. Looks like this story still hasn’t concluded nor will it anytime soon. If you held a gun to my head, I’d bet it’s the Yahoo-Google search advertising deal we’ve been hearing about lately - Microsoft wants to replace Google in the deal. Here’s the statement:

“In light of developments since the withdrawal of the Microsoft proposal to acquire Yahoo! Inc., Microsoft announced that it is continuing to explore and pursue its alternatives to improve and expand its online services and advertising business. Microsoft is considering and has raised with Yahoo! an alternative that would involve a transaction with Yahoo! but not an acquisition of all of Yahoo! Microsoft is not proposing to make a new bid to acquire all of Yahoo! at this time, but reserves the right to reconsider that alternative depending on future developments and discussions that may take place with Yahoo! or discussions with shareholders of Yahoo! or Microsoft or with other third parties.

“There of course can be no assurance that any transaction will result from these discussions.”

USA TODAY — May 12 — Facebook and MySpace are valued in the billions of dollars and are considered blueprints for how to build a website. Yet a deeper question lingers: How are they going to consistently produce profits to match their soaring valuations? With online ad spending booming into a nearly $50 billion market this year, there is plenty of money to be had.

MySpace

Since it scored a $900 million, three-year deal with Google in 2006, MySpace has been profitable. And it has given News Corp. a nice turn on its $650m acquisition in 2005. Richard Greenfield, an analyst at Pali Capital, expects MySpace to haul in $700m to $800m in revenue in 2008, mostly in advertising.

Facebook

Facebook hopes to double its revenue to $350m this year. The 70 million-member network has ramped up revenue with the sale of banner ads through an agreement with Microsoft.

Vodafone* today announces that it has agreed to acquire 100% of ZYB, a privately-owned company based in Denmark which operates a social networking and online management tool enabling mobile phone users to back-up and share their handsets’ contact and calendar information online. The acquisition will be made for a cash consideration of Eur31.5 million.

The acquisition of ZYB is a further advance in the implementation of Vodafone’s Total Communications strategy which is delivering new revenue growth around fixed broadband, mobile advertising and a rich set of internet services that integrate the mobile and PC customer experience. ZYB fits into this strategy by enhancing the range of communications services Vodafone can provide to its customers.

ZYB is unique amongst social networking sites as it is designed with the mobile device at its heart, allowing customers to share information and messages between their friends and colleagues who are held in their mobile phone’s address book.

ZYB increases communication choices for customers enabling them to send messages and images from their PC to multiple mobile devices in their mobile community, as well as taking advantage of the functionality of an instant messaging service.

Pieter Knook, Internet Services Director for Vodafone Group, said: “Vodafone understands that the core of any customer’s personal and business network is the set of contacts they hold on their mobile phone.

“Using a web portal as a link between the PC and the mobile device, ZYB provides an interactive way for people to nurture, contact and develop their relationships with their most important friends and colleagues and builds links with those contacts’ wider networks. This is Web 2.0 in action.

“This acquisition is consistent with our strategy of delivering products and services which meet our customers’ total communications needs.”

Tommy Ahlers, CEO of ZYB, added: “I am delighted that ZYB is to join Vodafone, the world’s largest international mobile community.

“Vodafone and ZYB share the same vision: to create a new mobile experience that builds on the convergence between the mobile and PC – and one which works on both platforms.

“By joining a company with Vodafone’s global reach, ZYB has more opportunities to bring to the mobile a further advance to the rich and interactive communications experience which people already recognise via the internet on their PC.”

ZYB will remain based in Denmark and upon acquisition will be incorporated into Vodafone’s Internet Services Division.

* The purchaser of ZYB is Vodafone Europe BV, a holding company of Vodafone Group, based in The Netherlands.

Facebook is all about openess, right? And privacy. It’s a balance, or something. Oftentimes it’s a tricky balance, but Facebook has self-instituted standards to live up to. And those standards say that Google’s new Friend Connect is evil (in so many words).

As Friend Connect supposedly shares user data in a way that circumvents total disclosure to all users involved, Facebook has stated that Friend Connect does not comply with its standards for collecting user data and redistributing it across the web. The result? Friend Connect’s access to Facebook has been suspended.

So much for the web platform coming to fruition in an easy, cooperative manner. Google still has Microsoft and Yahoo to compete with on the search level, but when it comes to the development of open standards, MySpace, Facebook and Google have become the battling trio.

Between Friend Connect, Facebook Connect, and MySpace’s Data Availability on top of existing open platforms, the race is on to become the dominant, most widely adopted platform for such open standards. It’s quite dizzying at this point, and not so cooperative after all. Facebook has stated that it’s reached out to Google in order to find a way in which to reach a satisfactory level of compliance, so hopefully that will happen soon. Google does, after all, have a burning desire to own the universe’s data.

SAN FRANCISCO - Social networking pioneer and inadvertent spammer Plaxo has been sold to cable and broadband company Comcast for between $145m and $175m.

Plaxo launched in 2001 as an address-book synching tool before anyone had heard of social media.

Last year, it launched its own social networking site Plaxo Pulse as a rival to Linkedin, although the site is more like Facebook in style.

However, the relaunch still presented Plaxo with an uphill challenge because of its lingering negative reputation for being a prolific, if accidental, spammer.

When first launched, Plaxo included a feature that would spam a users entire address book with offers to sign up to Plaxo. This “feature” was later turned off, but not before it had done a lot damage to the firm’s reputation.

It is thought that Comcast will use Plaxo to build its own social networking offering to bring together its various online, email and mobile services. These include its video entertainment site Fancast, movie site Fandango and video publishing company thePlatform.

Sam Schwartz, executive vice-president of Comcast Interactive Media, said: “Every social network is better the more end points you can connect with.

“Plaxo will offer users the ability to share with friends on all Comcast screens going forward.”

Ben Golub, CEO of Plaxo, said: “We intend to deliver on a vision of making social media a natural part of the lives of regular people, not just early-adopters.”

Google and Facebook have been linked to Plaxo as potential suitors, but in the end both firms declined to make a bid when the social media firm touted itself around Silicon Valley.

Like Google, Plaxo was founded by two Stanford engineering students, Todd Masonis and Cameron Ring. Also on board early was Napster co-founder Sean Parker, but he was forced out only to re-emerge as the founding president of Facebook.

Plaxo is a supporter of the cross-platform social media alliance OpenSocial founded by Google and MySpace, and latterly joined by Yahoo!.

It has also forged partnerships with other online firms, including Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and Yahoo!, as it strived to synch address books and calendars.

Plaxo now claims to have 20m members, a rise of 5m from three years ago, in part because of a partnership with AOL.

The two companies estimate that tying Plaxo with Comcast could create another 30m users. If true, it would represent a remarkable turnaround for Plaxo and make the $175m maximum price tag seem relatively cheap.

Google has surpassed Yahoo to become the most popular website in the United States, according to comScore’s rankings by the number of unique monthly visitors.

Google has long been the internet’s leader in search, but its audience has trailed Yahoo’s when counting other services such as email and photo sharing.

April’s numbers, which internet tracking firm comScore plans to formally release on Thursday, show Google on top for the first time.

The lead is tiny - 466,000 visitors out of about 141 million apiece. And while such measures are good as a gauge, they aren’t known for precision. In fact, rival rankings from Nielsen Online already had Google as the top web brand.

Still, comScore’s finding is one more hint of Google’s dominance over internet pioneer Yahoo.

Jack Flanagan, comScore’s executive vice president, said Google’s dominance in search creates “a halo effect” that can boost its other services.

Google now has the Picasa online photo-sharing service, competing with Flickr from Yahoo. Google also has launched a site on finance, while its Gmail email service keeps growing - and competing with Yahoo.

Google’s $US1.76 billion purchase of YouTube in November 2006 gave it the leading video-sharing website.

According to comScore, Google’s unique U.S. audience in April was 141.1 million, an 18 per cent increase from the same month in 2007. Yahoo’s audience grew 7 per cent, to 140.6 million. Microsoft was third at about 121 million.

That said, Yahoo still leads in page views, meaning visitors spend more time there or return more often. Many Google users make a simple search request and quickly go elsewhere based on the results. Yahoo had 33.6 billion page views to Google’s 28.7 billion.

The comScore data come from its Media Metrix panel, recruited primarily using random phone-based techniques.

ComScore recently took heat for its data on paid search clicks, which come from a larger panel that relies heavily on online recruitment techniques dismissed by many more traditional pollsters.

In that case, however, Wall Street concerns that the faltering U.S. economy could bog down Google resulted largely from investors and analysts ignoring comScore’s advice on how to interpret the paid-click data. Google wound up surpassing the analysts’ predictions in producing a first-quarter profit of 30 per cent.

Google PageRank or PR for short is numeric value assigned by Google to pages that represents how important a page is. The more important and known your pages are, the better PR they will get. PR is a scale from 0 to 10 where 0 is an unknown page for Google and 10 is the highest PR that can be assigned.

PageRank provides the basis for all of web search tools. It is always updated by Google in order to improve it and optimize it.

How is PageRank Calculated?
No one knows for sure how PageRank is currently calculated by Google (except Google itself). Some speculations about the algorithm are made by webmasters all of them are based on the original PageRank published by Google.
In essence, Google interprets a link for page A to page B as a vote by page A for page B. This means that page A is considered important (at least by page B).
The more votes (more links) page A gets the higher its PR will be.

Going into more details
As stated above, the main factor in PR is links (or backlinks as they are called). But no all links weight the same when it comes to PR. So an ‘important’ page linking to you gives you more PR than a ‘less important’ one.
There for you should always try to get backlinks from pages that have a high PR. These will benefit your page the most.
Another factor in PR propagation is the number of out-links the ‘voting’ page have. So a PR4 page with only one out-link on it might give you more weight than a PR5 page with 100 out-links on it.
An typical example here would be the famous milliondollarhomepage. This page is PR7 page with hunderds of out-links therefore its weight is would contribute very little to your page PR.

How to increase my PageRank?
Well as you would have probably guessed, PR can be increased by getting more backlinks for your page. The more backlinks and the higher quality they are the more your PR will be.
Here are some tips:

- Submit your site to directories.
- Write important content to your site that would make people link to you.
- Write articles and distribute them.
- Although I don’t recommend it but some people recommend it: Do link exchanges.
- Participate in forums (while adding your signature which includes a link to your site).
- Buy some links on high PR pages.

When does Google calculate PRs?
Google calculates pages PRs once every few months, this is called PR update. After a PR update is done, all pages are assigned a new PR by Google and you will have this PR until a new PR update is done.
New sites that were just launched will have a PR of 0 until an update is done by Google so that they are assigned an appropriate PR.

Other ‘possible’ factors considered
The following are some other factors might be considered by Google for calculating the PR lately:
- Site age: The older the better, Google seems to like old sites.
- Backlink relevancy: Googles seems to be taking into account how relevant is the page linking to you, if it is not that relevant, the link won’t weight much.
- Backlink duration: How long was the backlink up? The more the better.

Tools of the trade
Google Page rank: http://www.googlepagerankchecker.com/
Use this tool to discover your Google Page Rank (PR).

that I see people making. By avoiding these mistakes, you can avoid a lot of anguish and frustration in the long run.1) Optimizing your site for the wrong keywords

The first step in any search engine optimization campaign is to choose the keywords for which you should optimize your site.

If you initially choose the wrong keywords, all the time and effort that you devote in trying to get your site a high ranking will go down the drain.

If you choose keywords which no one search for, or if you choose keywords which won’t bring in targeted traffic to your site, what good will the top rankings do?

In order to learn how you can choose the correct keywords for which you should optimize your site, see my article on this topic.

Search Engine Positioning Mistakes explained here by Sumantra Roy

2) Putting too many keywords in the Meta Keywords tag

I often see sites which have hundreds of keywords listed in the Meta Keywords tag, in the hope that by listing the keywords in the Meta Keywords tag, they will be able to get a high ranking for those keywords.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Contrary to popular opinion, the Meta Keywords tag has almost completely lost its importance as far as search engine positioning is concerned.

Hence, just by listing keywords in the Meta Keywords tag, you will never be able to get a high ranking. To get a high ranking for those keywords, you need to put the keywords in the actual body content of your site.

3) Repeating the same keyword too many times

Another

common mistake

that people make is to endlessly repeat their target keywords in the body of their pages and in their Meta Keywords tags.Because so many people have used this tactic in the past (and continue to use it), the search engines keep a sharp lookout for this, and may penalize a site which repeats keywords in this fashion. Sure, you do need to repeat the keywords a number of times.

But, the way you place the keywords in your pages needs to make grammatical sense. Simply repeating the keywords endlessly no longer works. Furthermore, a particular keyword should ideally not be present more than thrice in your Meta Keywords tag.

Search Engine Positioning Mistakes explained here by Sumantra Roy

4) Creating lots of similar doorway pages

Another myth prevalent among people is that since the algorithm of each search engine is different, they need to create different pages for different search engines. While this is great in theory, it is counter-productive in practice.

If you use this tactic, you will soon end up with hundreds of pages, which can quickly become an administrative nightmare. Also, just imagine the amount of time you will need to spend constantly updating the pages in response to the changes that the search engines make to their algorithms.

Furthermore, although the pages are meant for different engines, they will actually end up being pretty similar to each other. The search engines are often able to detect when a site has created such similar pages, and may penalize or even ban this site from their index.

Hence, instead of creating different pages for different search engines, create one page which is optimized for one keyword for all the search engines. In order to learn how to create such pages, see my article on this topic.

5) Using Hidden Text

Hidden text is text with the same color as the background color of your page. For example, if the background color of your page is white and you have added some white text to that page, that is considered as hidden text.

Many webmasters, in order to get high rankings in the search engines, try to make their pages as keyword rich as possible. However, there is a limit to the number of keywords you can repeat in a page without making it sound odd to your human visitors. Thus, in order to ensure that the human visitors to a page don’t perceive the text to be odd, but that the page is still keyword rich, many webmasters add text (containing the keywords) with the same color as the background color.

This ensures that while the search engines can see the keywords, the human visitors cannot. The search engines have long since caught up with this technique, and ignore or penalize the pages which contain such text. They may also penalize the entire site if even one of the pages in that site contain such hidden text.

However, the problem with this is that the search engines may often end up penalizing sites which did not intend to use hidden text. For instance, suppose you have a page with a white background and a table in that page with a black background.

Search Engine Positioning Mistakes explained here by Sumantra Roy

Further suppose that you have added some white text in that table. This text will, in fact, be visible to your human visitors, i.e. this shouldn’t be called hidden text. However, the search engines can interpret this to be hidden text because they may often ignore the fact that the background of the table is black.

Hence, in order to ensure that your site is not penalized because of this, you should go through all the pages in your site and see whether you have inadvertently made any such mistake.

6) Creating Pages Containing Only Graphics

The search engines only understand text - they don’t understand graphics. Hence, if your site contains lots of graphics but little text, it is unlikely to get a high ranking in the search engines.

For improving your rankings, you need to replace the graphics by keyword rich text for the search engine spiders to feed on.

7) Not using the NOFRAMES tag in case your site uses frames

Many search engines don’t understand frames. For sites which have used frames, these search engines only consider what is present in the NOFRAMES tag. Yet, many webmasters make the mistake of adding something like this to the NOFRAMES tag: “This site uses frames, but your browser doesn’t support them”.

For the search engines which don’t understand frames, this is all the text that they ever get to see in this site, which means that the chances of this site getting a good ranking in these search engines are non-existent. Hence, if your site uses frames, you need to add a lot of keyword rich text to the NOFRAMES tag. For more information on the different issues that arise when you use frames in your site, see my article on this topic.

Search Engine Positioning Mistakes explained here by Sumantra Roy

 Using Page Cloaking

Page cloaking is a technique used to deliver different web pages under different circumstances. People generally use page cloaking for two reasons:

In order to hide the source code of their search engine optimized pages from their competitors and ii) in order to prevent human visitors from having to see a page which looks good to the search engines but does not necessarily look good to humans.

The problem with this is that when a site uses cloaking, it prevents the search engines from being able to spider the same page that their users are going to see. And if the search engines can’t do this, they can no longer be confident of providing relevant results to their users.

Thus, if a search engine discovers that a site has used cloaking, it will probably ban the site forever from their index. Hence, my advice is that you should not even think about using cloaking in your site. For more information on what page cloaking is, how it is implemented, and why you should not use cloaking, see my article on this topic.

9) Using Automatic Submission Tools

In order to save time, many people use an automatic submission software or service to submit their sites to the major search engines. It is true that submitting your site manually to the search engines takes a lot of time and that an automatic submission tool can help you save a lot of time.

However, the search engines don’t like automatic submission tools and may ignore your pages if you use them. In my opinion, the major search engines are simply too important for you not to spend the time to submit your site manually to them.

In order to speed up the process of submitting your site, you can use our free submission tool which allows you to submit your site manually to all the search engines, without having to go to the “ADD URL” pages of the individual engines. It is available here.

10) Submitting too many pages per day

People often make the mistake of submitting too many pages per day to the search engines.

This often results in the search engines simply ignoring many of the pages which have been submitted from that site.

Ideally, you should submit no more than 1 page per day to the search engines. While many search engines accept more than 1 page per day from a particular domain, there are some which only accept 1 page per day. Hence, by limiting yourself to a maximum of one page per day, you ensure that you stay within the limits of all the search engines.

11) Devoting too much time to

search engine positioning

Yes - I lied. There’s another common mistake that people make when it comes to search engine optimization - they spend too much time over it.

Search Engine Positioning Mistakes explained here by Sumantra Roy

Sure, search engine placement is the most cost effective way of driving traffic to your site and you do need to spend some time every day learning how the search engines work and in optimizing your site for the search engines.

However, you must remember that search engine optimization is a means to an end for you - it’s not the end in itself. The end is to increase the sales of your products and services. Hence, apart from trying to improve your

site’s position in the search engines

, you also need to spend time on all the other factors which determine the success or the failure of your web site - the quality of the products and services that you are selling, the quality of your customer service, and so on. You may have excellent rankings in the search engines, but if the quality of your products and services are poor, or if your customer service leaves a lot to be desired, those high rankings aren’t going to do much good.

Sandboxes and Google

Sandboxes are used to “quarantine” things in the real world (you keep all the sand in one place that way, in theory, but then again have you seen the trail from a kids sandbox?, still I digress), the term being also used with computers in relation to “dangerous things” like Active X controls etc.

Google on the other hand are using it to “quarantine” nothing more harmless than new websites. Why are they doing this? They would say because so many new websites are (a) awful and will soon wither, so why bother with them, or (b) that they are the “creatures” on SEM companies whose sole aim is to artificially increase the rankings of another website through interlinking, and that therefore we are going to ignore them too.

The Sandbox Effect

Websites can linger in this Sandbox for 3 - 6 months and whilst you can reduce the detention period, it’s difficult to break a website out. Worst still, there is it appears a Sandbox Effect that lasts for up to 2 years! The effects here are mostly seen for high value (most searched for) keywords, where again research has shown that “new” sites (built after 2003) have little chance of good rankings on the Google engine.

The Power of the Lesser used Keyword

So what does this mean for businesses that want to get the most out of the internet and the promise that it offers? Simple, (a) don’t rely on Google alone (there are other engines out there) and (b) target the lesser keywords. You’ll be amazed just how many variations there in the words that people use when searching. Sure there are some that are used more often, but access to these is in effect barred to all new websites on Google (and can be hard to get for new websites anyway until they build up some momentum ) and besides all that, the number of searches for these “lesser” keywords is, when added together HUGE (just like your shopping receipt at Tescos - “How the hell did it add up to that, individually everything was so cheap?” being a thought that many must have had when reaching for the wallet/purse).

So, if you are interested in getting the best out of your shiny new website, remember those “lesser sought after keywords” they could well be the answer to your problems for the first few years of your websites life.

Submitting to directories

This article describes the basics of submitting to the human-edited Internet directories such as Yahoo!, dmoz.org, (the Open Directory Project) and Zeal. (For more information on submitting specifically to Zeal, please read: Submitting to LookSmart for Free Through Zeal)

To get listed on a directory, you submit your front page URL using the directory’s submission (add URL) form. Your submission is then reviewed by an editor and ranked according to the description provided on the form. Reviewers check every submission to decide if it belongs in the directory, and if it was submitted to the most appropriate category.

Only Human

When submitting to any directory, be sure to keep your reviewer in mind and treat your submission with kid gloves. Always read the submission guidelines before submitting, and follow them closely.

As with everything in life, being polite and following the rules will get you far. Being rude and arrogant will most likely result in unfavorable alteration of your description — or a completely ignored submission. Reviewers can change the content of submissions at will, so think about your Web site as objectively as possible and prepare accordingly.

Choosing the best category must be done judiciously. One good method involves doing a search using the most relevant keyword phrases for your site, and noting which categories pop up. Look for the most appropriate category, analyzing your site as an outside observer would.

Choose the category your site truly belongs in, not the one where you’d prefer to see it.

Choose subcategories over top-level categories. If you submit to a top-level category even though appropriate subcategories are available, there’s a good chance your submission will be denied. Similarly, if your site is local in nature, be sure to submit it to the appropriate geographic region.

Once you’ve decided upon the most appropriate category, find and click the “add a site” (or submit URL) link. Now you’re ready to begin the submission process.

Submitting to directories explained here by Jill Whalen

Steps to Success

In choosing a title, most directories do not allow you much leeway. To be safe, a good rule of thumb is to use your company name or the official name of your Web site. Adherence to this rule varies by directory, however. Yahoo! is very strict and allows company or Web site names only. Zeal and dmoz are more lenient, but they are beginning to crack down.

Occasionally, these directories will allow you to slip some keywords into the title, but do so at your own risk. This practice could raise a red flag for your submission and subject it to additional scrutiny.

The Web site description posted with your URL is a big factor in how your site will rank once it’s listed in the directory. It is very important to do this right the first time. If you put too much promotional jargon in your description or make it too long, for example, the editors are sure to change it. When they do, you can bet your keywords won’t appear in the final listing. Be concise, be sensible, and, most of all, include your most important keywords whenever possible.

If you’ve created a good meta description tag for your site, start with that. Copy and paste it into the submission form, then start deleting extraneous words. Move words around until you have the shortest yet most descriptive sentence possible. If you do this correctly, chances are the editors won’t change it. They’ll appreciate the fact that you saved them editing time.

Be sure the words you’re using in your description appear on the pages of your Web site. If they don’t, and the site appears to be about subjects other than what you described in your form, your description might be

edited. If you don’t have a good grasp on how to do this, you might want to have a professional do it for you. I say this only because it’s very difficult to change a site description once it’s listed in most Internet directories.

Once you’ve taken the steps I’ve described, your submission should be successful. Each directory has its unique procedure, but the basics of choosing the most appropriate category and creating the best description apply across the board.

Google, Yahoo and MSN. Most webmasters and online marketers spend a lot of their time trying to get listed in the big three search engines. But trying to figure out the algorithms and robot visits for these SE’s can mean changing your site for the search engines and not for your customers.

As an example, our partner site HostingGoodies.com has an extremely hard time ranking with Google and Yahoo becuase the keywords are so competitive. Without spending money on PPC campaigns and other advertising, they could never be found on Google.

While we did manage to get this site ranked on the first page for some very specific keyword phrases, getting it ranked for general keywords is next to impossible.

One solution we have been using is targeting the smaller search engines for this highly competitive site. By doing this we have increased traffic and sales. Now while most of the search engines follow the same guidelines such as , keywords, content, linking etc. the smaller engines tend to rank sites on a fairer playing field.

I have found less “sponsored links” on top of search results and more relevant results for what I typed in the search box. I would try this yourself. Check your results for keywords in Google and they will different in ExactSeek and even Yahoo.

The point I am trying to make is not to spend all your time trying to please Google, but to spend some time pleasing the smaller guys. Think of it this way. If you rank on page 7 for your keyword on Google and rank on page one or two for a few of the smaller engines, which do you think will bring more targeted FREE traffic?

So, give it a try. Visit Exactseek.com, SearchBliss.com, dogpile.com or Looksmart.com just to name a few. Check out your rankings on these engines and visit their SEO Guidelines to find out how to better make your site friendly for their spiders to visit. Then tweek your site a bit and resubmit it or just let the spiders find it on their own.

Within a month or so or even a few weeks, you may start to see results you only dreamed of with Google.

Google is dancing again! A full tilt all out boogie - a long drawn out rumble somewhere near cursor heaven. My own keywords are going up, down and out the door. Take your pick. Just want the bloody thing to stop. My nerves are shot… three years of hard work may just go down the drain and there’s no end in sight!

Fellow webmasters will recognize my slight desperation, my total sense of unease when Google dances. It all has to do with pre-conditioning, psych majors will know this, I am well conditioned to react. I have been burnt horribly by Google dances in the past so my panic is almost palatable. Forget Pavlov’s dog, when Google dances, webmasters like me salivates.

And Google is really dancing this time, Jagger has nothing on this baby. Nobody dances like Google, even puts Seinfeld’s Elaine to shame. And if you’re new to the webmaster’s favorite folly, a Google dance happens with Google adjusts its ranking algorithm, causing a ripple effect and adjustments in the rankings of keywords. Sites move up or down. Previous major Google dances have been called Florida, Austin, Bourbon…

When Google dances, webmasters sweat bullets. And it’s not all in their heads. It’s not psychosomatic. Horror stories abound, about honest hard working webmasters (not a black hat to be seen) suddenly waking up to find their site or sites gone from Google. Thousands of daily visitors/customers to their site vanish in an algorithmic fog overnight. Swift. Brutal. Painful.

Gone, top ranking keywords nowhere to be seen. Gone, visitors, visitors, visitors. Gone, sales, sales, sales…

More times than not, the sites come back or regain their positions (rankings for popular keywords - for the totally uninitiated, keywords or keyword phrases are what people type into search engines to find what they’re looking for), keywords are the conerstones of the whole Internet. Without them, the Internet as we know it, would not work.

Mastering Google means mastering your site’s keywords or phrases. Get a top ten SERPs ranking for your keywords and changes are very good you will have a successful site. Webmasters work for years getting their site’s keywords up into the top keyword ranking spots. Countless fortunes have been made by those who have mastered the game. Countless fortunes have tumbled when Google dances.

Of course, the sensible thing to do is for all webmasters to unite and bring Google down a peg or two. At least in our own minds, if not in the real world. Don’t place so much importance on Google. Yes, it’s very important, but snap out of it. The more webmasters whine and moan about Google’s erratic dances, algorithm and rankings - the more power we are giving Google.

Why is Google still so important to webmasters? MSN and Yahoo are gaining ground but Google is still the top dog and here’s why: As far as the search engine market goes, whether it’s wearing a halo or a cursor, Google is still the only game in town. According to Alexa, a company that tracks web traffic, the top three sites on the Web are 1-Yahoo, 2-MSN, and 3-Google. However, when you compare where people go on these sites - search.yahoo.com accounts for only 9% of Yahoo’s traffic and search.msn.com only 7% of MSN’s total traffic; whereas most of Google’s traffic is search traffic. This is a big distinction.

Once burnt, twice shy. Years ago, the Florida Update totally wiped my site from the Google Radar. Hence my total apprehension when one of these dances comes along. I wanted my site to survive the next Google dance so I put some simple strategies into place that would hopefully help me weather this and future Google dances. Strategies that you might also find helpful to fight your own private battle with Google. Here’s what I did and what you can also do:

Find A Good SEO Expert

Find a good SEO expert and have him or her in your corner. I found Brad Callen. One of a very few people who truly understands Google and knows how it works. I learned much of what makes Google really tick from Brad. I advise you to find or hire a SEO expert like Brad to help you out with your site or sites. Just the fact of having a SEO expert in your corner makes handling Google a little bit easier.

Link Only To Safe Sites

One of the simplest ways to keep on the good side of Google is to make sure all links on your site link only to sites that have a PR4 or over. Don’t link to bad neighborhoods, avoid linkfarms like the plague.

One Keyword To A Page

The major mistake most webmasters make - they don’t focus on one keyword phrase per page. Try to keep your pages separate, write on one or two closely related keyword phrases for each webpage and you will see a big improvement from Google. Don’t keyword spam but sprinkle your keyword phrase and variations of it throughout your copy.

RSS To The Rescue

Creating an RSS feed and Blog for your site’s major keywords is as simply as starting a free blog with Blogger.com (owned by Google) - it can be done in a few minutes.

I favor using Blogger because it now has the Google Blog search bar at the top. Blog search will bring in a lot of traffic and your content is instantly indexed in Google. What more can you ask for. Whatever you do, don’t underestimate RSS - it’s going to play a major role in the Internet of the near future. Especially when Microsoft comes out with its Longhorn browser which will be RSS empowered.

Embrace Article Marketing

If you can string two sentences together start writing articles on the major keywords or topics of your site. Place your links in the resource box of your articles and submit them to online article directories like ezinearticles.com or buzzle.com. Write helpful ‘how-to’ articles and other webmasters will place your articles on their sites and you will get an ambundance of one-way links back to your site. Google loves these kinds of links and since the sites picking up your articles will all be related to your site’s topic - these will be relevant links.

Customer/Visitor Focused Content

Besides high PR links to your sites, Google also loves content. Write unique content that’s related to your site’s topic and write a lot of it. It’s the main reason anyone bothers to come to your site in the first place, so make sure you have good original content. Add high quality articles from sources you respect and your visitors will have another reason to visit your site.

Keep saying to yourself: content is king, content is king. Make sure you put that belief into practice and Google will reward you nicely. Well, maybe. Nine times out of ten.

Actually, this time my site jumped to PR5 and my Google backlinks went up. Also some of my keywords are up but most have stayed the same. Overall, my traffic from Google remains the same which is very worrisome, if I moved up to PR5 - my traffic should theoretically rise also. I saw a dramatic rise in traffic when my site went to PR4.

Such are the little puzzling mine-fields, whether intentionally or not (I can’t believe anyone could be this sadistic!) Google throws every webmaster’s way. Over time, if you let it get to you, it will drive you stark raving bonkers. Especially, if you are seriously building an income, lifestyle and well-being around the Internet and by default Google.

For every webmaster, Google is a never ending endurance race of strategies, positioning and planning. Keeping one step ahead of this search engine while keeping your eyes peeled for the men in white, is a never ending nightmare, I mean struggle. One every webmaster must fight and win on their own terms. Follow the simple steps above, and you will be better prepared for the next Google dance.

FAQS/Comments

Q. Should I buy content batter from the box or attempt to make it myself? A. Content batter usually tastes best homemade. Although some people might want to get it over with and buy the mix from a box, it’s all according to your taste. I, personally, believe homemade is more rich and adds your own personal touch.

Q. What if I’m out of creativity? A. There are many, many people making these cakes and I’m sure they won’t mind if you took a taste for inspiration. Sometimes the batter just needs a little beating.

Q. I have baked for a year and pagerank nor linkback will grow! A. Is the server set to the right temperature? Did you check it frequently? Several factors can contribute to lack of pagerank and linkback growth. Make sure you didn’t do anything to make your cake stale.

Q. What brand of meta tags do you recommend? A. Honestly, it doesn’t matter. The generic ones are just as good as the expensive ones. So I wouldn’t worry too much about spending tons of money on them. Actually, the best way is to make them yourself.

Q. I heard word of mouth was hard to come by. So how am I supposed to get 1 jar! A. Easy. Give ‘em something to talk about. You’ll have the whole jar in no time.

Q. I do not have the patience to wait a whole year for Google Rank Cake! I have money and I will buy the biggest one there is! A. Good luck and see you at the unemployment line. Google Rank Cake cannot be bought. Ever! While it’s true you can purchase the ____________ which appears next to the Google Rank Cake, however you can never purchase the cake itself.

Q. Is it okay to let my Google Rank Cake bake longer than a year? A. Yes. In fact, the more you let it bake, the richer it will get. Just as long as you remember to spoon on fresh content batter every so often to prevent dryness.

Q. My friend’s cake is the biggest I’ve seen and mine is the second biggest. But I’ve used more content batter and meta tags than him! A. Boy, I remember the day when having a cake that was one layer too small was something to truly fuse about. You’ll have your day too, just remember to keep adding content batter and creativity.

I’d love to hear how your Google Cake Rank turned out! And remember, it’s not the size of the server that matters, but the person behind it!

Search engine optimization tips in this category are devoted to the art of building your webpages effectively and making them interesting for the search engines. The articles under this heading describe general notions and terms of the search engine optimization field, providing you with a comprehensive introduction into SEO (search engine optimization).

The definition of search engine optimization is simple; it is a number of techniques used to make webpages attractive to search engines and benefit from high listings via changes to a site to make it more search engine compatible. Nowadays, search engines are complicated and protected systems, and search engine optimization becomes merely a science.

Mainly, search engine optimization tips and techniques are important as you can get traffic for free. You can obtain the same or even bigger number of visitors by optimization alone without having to pay for advertising. You can find out that many Web surfers tend to ignore paid (sponsored) results, which are displayed by the search engines, but if you site is shown on the top of the first page of SE results for the query, you are able to turn those surfers into visitors.

It is vital for every site owner to keep an eye on how his website ranks in the top search engines and directories. The truth is that your company’s site prestige and reputation is seriously damaged if its rankings are not in the top ten for the related keywords, even more so if rankings in search engines are lower than top thirty. If this is the case, you might as well be invisible on the Web. According to researchers at Forrestre Research, Inc., users hardly ever go beyond the top thirty search engine rankings for a single search. It is estimated that the top thirty search engine results receive over ninety percent of search traffic.

Here you can find out how Internet consumers mostly find websites, according to the survey of Forrestre Research, Inc.:

Search engines: 81%

Link from another site: 59%

Viral marketing (word of mouth): 56%

TV: 48%

Guessed URL: 41%

Online advertising: 20%

Radio: 19%

Direct mail: 10%

The problem with search engine optimization is that every site owner does it, so when a new technique gets into public domain, it becomes too popular too soon. Consequently, search engines answer to this step by reducing the weight in their ranking algorithms of such techniques in order to maintain the usability of their search results.

Nevertheless, search engine optimization offers distinctive features that are low risk, cost effective, provide reliable and constant results, brand awareness, and affordability. For websites, every little bit helps, so search engine optimization tips and techniques are vital for any business and every site owner. Search engine optimization is what helps you bring your message to the broadest and most targeted audience. It helps you not to get lost in the huge amount of competition because search engine traffic never stops if you have once achieved good ranking. Search engines promote your pages 24/7. Such important showing as ROI is well worthy and fast due to the search engine optimization as you get only targeted traffic to a site with the help of SEO.

Now you can see that search engines work and features should also be well known. Without knowledge of ranking algorithms and the way result listing is generating, most of your work can be idle or invisible for search engines, so you should make your site attractive to computer robot programs called spiders, which most search engines use. They find the pages for future inclusion via the links in the pages from their database. In general, links and their quality play very important role for search engine optimization. Moreover, speaking about search engine optimization tips and techniques, we should mention that, “Content and links share the kingdom.” Search engine optimizers argue about the prevalence of link popularity and believe that it always will be a key component in getting top ranking, but let’s start from the beginning.

What Search Engines and Directories Take Into Consideration?

As you know, spiders (which most search engines use) regard your site as HTML code only, so your first task will be to get full notion of the structure of HTML document. Spiders work in the following way: at first, they select and build search engine database of pages. After that, spiders follow links of the already known sites. Therefore, your page becomes the subject matter of search engine spider. What will a spider see or ignore?

Title

Speaking about tags optimization, we should start from title tag as all the search engines consider the keywords it contains. These keywords influence the ranking because search engines give them a great deal of weight in their ranking system. It is true that search engines pay attention on them during estimating your pages’ relevancy towards keywords. However, keywords are important when your title tag finally appears in the SERP (search engine result page). Remember that the interests of real people and all search engines are the same, so your title (which must help identify relevant keyword phrases) should be attractive for the surfers of the Web as well.

Description

The next HTML tag is the meta description tag. The content of this tag will be shown in the search result list of most search engines and directories. Try to make it search engine friendly. However, there is some thought that the description tag is not important for search engine optimization but as this work is easy enough it’s better to create some proper sentences that incorporate important keyword phrases. However, if you have no meta description tag on your site, search engines make it for you via selection of text where appear keyword phrases important for users while searching or the first few words of your webpage. Therefore, in order to avoid misunderstanding and bad results, description also deserves your attention.

Content

The main idea here is to make your content focused on the relevant theme throughout the site using targeted keyword phrases and making it in a way that reads naturally. It will help to avoid the situation when a site attracted lots of visitors but confuses them by content written with only purpose to stuff keywords here and there.

Quality

This parameter is more important for directory submitting as your site will be reviewed by a directory editor. The quality of the site means you should focus your site design on usefulness and comprehensiveness. Your site will attract visitors not because of the keen graphics or the smart domain name, but rather for information contained in your pages, which will enlighten them and answer the purpose of query.

Popularity

Link popularity is a very important factor that influences site relevance in the search engine ranking process. It is widely known that all of the major search engines give credit to sites that have quality links pointing to them, so getting relevant links from other sites is huge aid for your site. However, it can be a daunting task. Links pointing to your site from low relevant sites can hardly help your pages. Try to avoid low ranking, low traffic, or unrelated sites while you are looking for link partners; otherwise, these links will be nearly worthless.

A last but vital factor is search engine optimization itself, but we should also mention that each of the major search engines has its distinctive shade for optimizing the site. That’s why search engine optimization is the art of getting higher visibility across today’s most important search engines.

Usually for indexing, crawler-based engines consider more factors than those they can find on your pages. They are so-called “off-the-page” factors. In order to enhance popularity of your site for search engines, you should pay attention to the balance of link exchange, text used in links that point to you, what the Page Rank of the linking pages is, whether the page is present in some directories under related categories, among other factors. All these factors will be regarded by the spider before putting your page into an index. You can also artificially increase your page’s relevance by “on-the-page” factors. This is a very important thing to consider when building successful site, too. Using targeted keywords, adjusting the corresponding areas of HTML code, and other factors can help you in developing a nice site, but, of course, you can hardly control other pages on the Internet, those which link to you. Therefore, off-the-page relevance prevails in the crawler’s eyes.

Another important section is optimization for a particular search engine. While all the major engines use different algorithms, you can play on the main purpose of all of them because the main their purpose is providing the searcher with the most relevant results available. It is the one common thread that helps your site to rank highly across all the major engines. Most of rules and search engine optimization tips for particular engine can facilitate you efforts in this way.

Optimizing for MSN could be formulated similar to the optimization tips and rules for all the major search engines. There are important both off-the-page and on-the-page factors when ranking. To rank highly on MSN, one needs to build a solid sized site, get a number of relevant links, and use balanced number of properly chosen keywords and quality content. Start from getting your site listed in the directories. The effects of the site and inbound links can be picked up very quickly, and you can rank well with good search engine optimization efforts in a few months on MSN. To rank well on the Yahoo! search engine, you should follow all the search engine optimization tips and techniques mentioned for MSN’s search engine. The distinctive factor for Yahoo! engine will be links and content of your site. More detailed information can be found in the Yahoo! devoted section of our site.

Google, which combines search engine optimization tips as for MSN as for Yahoo! search engines, regards even more factors. So we should take a closer and detailed look on its demands as a leading search engine. While Google would like you to believe that PageRank algorithm is main principle of their search technology, other factors are also regarded for site relevancy. Therefore, taking into consideration the leading place of this search engine, it is easy to see why every webmaster and website owner is primarily concerned about attaining Google rankings. Link building strategy plays an important role as far as the best practices in search engine optimization, as do quality content, size of the website, age of links, and so on.

In conclusion, optimizing for a new site can grow little by little, starting from the search engine, which will rank you more easily and qucikly. Gradually, you can develop your website popularity and number of links, which will help you to target more sophisticated and significant engine like Google. As we mentioned in the beginning, search engines strive to improve the quality of their search results, so optimization of your site should be continuous in nature for achieving better result in ranking.

Creating a web community can have a synergistic effect for your website.

1) Improve your search engine ranking. Having thousands of pages, each littered with your specific keywords, does a lot to improve your visibility on the web. Having that many forum postings linked to your site tells search engines that you are an expert in your field, and as such they will treat you like the king or queen that you are by putting your site at the top of searches for your specific keywords.

2) Multiply your conversion percentages. You don’t have to be a brain surgeon to know that if you engage your visitors, it is much easier to turn them into customers. It has been proven that the longer you can keep your customers on your website the more likely it is that they will make a purchase. Turn that visitor into a customer and then that customer into a life-long supporter.

3) Increase web traffic. If you are trying to sell something, a web community gives people another reason to come to your site. With all of your pages indexed in Google and Yahoo, people looking for answers on your topic will find your forum, and then be led to your store. They’ll be more informed and also be more trusting of your site knowing that there are other users involved. Now that’s good marketing strategy!

Our well-educated researchers and writers work with you to quickly to boost your site up to it’s potential. Unlike other paid forum posting services, our writers are skilled at what they do, and take the actual craft of creating relevant posts and threads for you very seriously. You won’t find our entries laced with grammatical and factual inaccuracies.

We start by researching your website and any related materials we can get our hands on.

Then our team brainstorms on the various threads and posts that will be needed to make your community come to life. Our goal is to make any visitor want to stay because they see something they like. The posting takes place over a period of time that you select when you order. We always keep keywords in mind when we post that will help you gain an advantage in search engine rankings.

If you choose, an extra and hugely useful step (the one that differentiates us from our competitors) is that once we are through posting we can take your entire website, (including all of our newly generated forum posts) and submit it to over 200 web directories and search engines, including Google and Yahoo. By doing this, all of the new keywords generated by our posts will be indexed by the web services and will soon be searchable on their websites. Your traffic increases as a result, as more people find what they are looking for by using your site. Talk about Search Engine Optimization!

What is Reciprocal Link Building ?

It’s a process where we requests webmaster of different sites similar to your site to put our site’s link to their site, in return we also place their site’s information to our site. In this way we not only gets free visitors from their site but also get good ranks from different search engines. Most of the search engines depends on number of quality themed links (similar to you) to rank a site for specific keywords. So link building is MUST for any site wants to get promoted in search engines. Our Link Popularity Services are made such a way that any body can afford it.

Reciprocal Link Building Plans

What’s One Way Link Building ?

In this process your site will get linked from some sites but your site will not link back to that site. This process will be more helpful because your site doesn’t link to those sites but many sites link to you, in this way search engines think your site is very very important, so other sites are linking to you: Like many sites link to Google.com. But this process is costly than Reciprocal Link Building Services because we have to arrange some other way to link back to those sites who are linking to you.

One Way Link Building Plans

What’s Link Popularity ?

It’s the number of back links pointing to your site from other sites and directories. Link popularity is only responsible in getting page rank in Google. As the number increases your page rank will increase in Google. As many sites link back to your site Google and other search engines think your site is very important so other sites are linking to you.

Almost every search engines rank a site with the number of incoming Quality, Relevant links (Themed Links). Google’s Page Rank is most vital because 46% (Yahoo 36%, msn 15%) of the searches are done on Google and the results are entirely dependent on the Page Rank of your site. Suppose we have got 50 PR 4 links from different sites related to us. Now when a visitor clicks our link link from that site then that page pass that page rank to Google, in this way that visitor cast a vote for our site from that link page. But Google Page Rank not only depends on the quantity of the links but the Quality and Relevance of the links a page receives.

Is Relevancy a factor ?

YES!!! It’s important in search engine promotion. Think a situation: You are running a business related site and have got a link back from a Pharmacy related site. Now when a visitor visits that health site is there any chance of getting that visitor back to your site ? NO, the person who is looking for a health/pharmacy will never come to your site who is searching for pharmacy.

Which Link Building Plan will be helpful for me ?

Both type of plans are helpful in the effort of getting good rank in search engines. Depending of your budget you can choose any plan. Difference is 1000 one way link gives you same effect of 5000 Reciprocal Links. As much as you Exchange Links with good sites similar to your theme, you’ll get higher page rank and also you’ll be more visible in search results. If you can get that much links with very good keywords as anchor texts then you’ll get your site permanently placed on number 1 page in search engines.

Social bookmarking submission has developed into a powerful tool for SEO experts. It involves linking sites within the various forums, blogs and message boards on social networking websites, blog sites and content centric sites like Digg. Considered a better alternative to submitting a website on blogs, manual social bookmarking is a simple, convenient and hassle-free way of making sure that your site is noticed and marketed in the right circle.

Google and other major search engines have decided to go content-centric; the more places you have your content, the more traffic you generate. Submitting your site manually with social bookmarking sites like Digg, blogthis!, orkut, and myspace will ensure a heavier volume of relevant traffic. Our constant endeavour is to serve sites with well-researched and well-directed traffic by our bookmarking submission.

Our team ensures that every site is first indexed for the intended target audience, so only sites with a suitable page rank and pedigree are selected. All links are strictly one-way and permanent. Our service is tuned in to the ever-changing world of search engine optimisation. With the implementation of context-sensitive search algorithms and with the advent of more personalised search results for users, submission of your site contents to a social bookmarking site is a no longer a matter of trial and error.

Each bookmarking site has its own pros and cons, and it takes meticulous planning and research before one can consider submitting his/her site content to a social bookmarking service. From the most basic press release to more complex articles, all site content is examined and then the appropriate site is determined for submission. To top it all, since all bookmarking sites require registration, there is no way that any spam links can be generated to or from your site.

Social bookmarking sites are search engine friendly and within seven days of submission, links start to appear in all major search engines. If you are serious about your sites Link Building, Ranking and Traffic… Social Bookmarking is a must.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) has started turning submission to directories and articles to its advantage. You could have a world-class website; you may have the latest e-commerce technology and the best graphic design work. Now comes the tricky part: choosing an SEO firm. With a long list of SEO firms claiming that they can do submission to directories, link building and article submission, does a chocolate website really need to build links to an oil merchants` directory?

Google has implemented LSI and already started shunting out link farms, and pointless paid links. For any SEO firm or webmaster the most worthwhile ways forward are articles and other web content. Not only does our article submission service ensure that all incoming links to your site are ‘relevant,’ but also that your precious time and resources are not wasted on futile link building.

Our submission services ensure that each manual directory we submit with is relevant to your site; each directory is chosen based on pedigree and reliability. Any major search engine that actually catalogues and indexes a directory has to meet certain criteria. Our service ensures that each directory we submit to has been thoroughly researched and not blacklisted by any search engine. Better still,- we offer only one-way linking services so no reciprocal links are required.

Key Features:

We manually submit to all directories. Our 23 staff members are well trained and follow all submission guidelines.

The links that you get are one-way permanent links for your website; no reciprocal link required.

We constantly, review, verify and update all the links in our 950+ directories.

We provide excellent customer. All queries will be answered within 24 hours.

We allow our users to give ten unique titles and ten unique description to avoid duplication of content.
